Staff Pensions - Revised Timetable

2012-01-26 15:27:00

A revised timetable for when employers of all sizes must start enrolling their staff in a workplace pension has been set out by the Government.

Large employers, those with 250 or more employees, will not face any change in the date they are due to start enrolling their staff.

This follows the announcement in November that small businesses would be given more time to prepare for automatic enrolment to help them out in exceptionally tough economic times.

The timetable for employers to begin enrolling their staff starts with the largest firms first, followed by medium, then small…

Blue Monday: advice for employers on the most depressing day of the year

2012-01-16 11:06:51

Today (Monday 16 January) is statistically the most depressing day of the year for employees, and has been dubbed ‘Blue Monday’.

Francis Goss, Head of Commercial Operations at Grass Roots, has offered some suggestions for employers to help beat the gloom during Blue Monday and throughout 2012.

1. Share your objectives for 2012. Do you know what you want to achieve this year? Do your colleagues share that vision and do they know how important their role is in achieving it? Set team goals and rewards to focus the team and provide a common direction.

2. Recognise.

Age discrimination in the workplace could get worse over the next two years

2012-01-16 11:05:27

Last month HR magazine asked readers if they thought age discrimination in the workplace was a serious problem: 29% said yes, 71% said no.

I am not surprised by these findings but I am particularly concerned that this could get worse over the next couple of years as businesses retrench from the recession.

I think employers will be looking for younger and perhaps, from their point of view, 'less expensive' staff at the cost of experience. And yet during downturns, it is important to get a good mix of the new and the old,…

Age discrimination and stereotyping remain 'rooted' in UK workplaces, finds DWP

2012-01-16 11:02:52

Research published today by the Department for Work and Pensions shows that age-related discrimination and stereotyping remain rooted in British society.

The findings, based on new analysis from the ONS opinions survey, found on average, respondents thought that 'youth' ends at 41 and that 'old age' begins at 59. But this varied by as much as 20 years in relation to the age of the respondent. The age at which youth stops and old age starts increased in relation to the age of the respondent.

Respondents were asked to say how acceptable or unacceptable they would find…

Job Applicants WANT Feedback!

2012-01-13 14:20:34

More than 2,000 respondents to a recent survey concerning whether or not a company responds to a job applicant’s application reveals that applicants want feedback. StartWire, an Internet job search organizer, conducted the survey and has reported that employers who do not respond to job applicants risk damaging their company’s reputation and employment brand.

77 percent of respondents reported that when they never heard anything from a company after applying they thought less of them. 72 percent reported that they would not be likely to recommend that company’s products or services, and 58 percent were not likely to buy a…

Employers Fail to Grow Talent Pipelines for Critical Roles..

2012-01-13 14:07:07

Employers in the UK are failing to identify and fill the job roles essential to expanding their business, according to research from Taleo Corporation.

More than nine out of 10 (94%) of companies surveyed felt there were roles within their organisations without which their company could not grow. But the importance of these roles means that the necessary skills are scarce and in high demand, and so vacancies are often very hard to fill.

According to Taleo's Critical Talent Pipelines research, which surveyed 500 HR decision makers in large UK companies, the most critical roles aside from…

The Hallmarks of a Recruitment Partner

2012-01-10 15:23:13

If you find yourself partnering with a professional recruiter, there’s probably a reason.  Maybe you’ve had a hard time finding the right employee on your own.  Maybe you simply don’t have the time to dedicate to a fruitless search of the job boards.  Or maybe your career site is being crushed under 8 gigatons of resumes. In any case, you’re working with a Recruiter for a legitimate business reason.

Now, we understand you may have had a bad experience in the past. And we understand that you apparently mistrust all Recruiters as soon as you find out what they…

2012-01-01 12:01:01

If you want to have a happy 2012 then take personal responsibility and make the decision to have a happy and positive year.

Having been involved with research on the very intangible and elusive concept of happiness for many years I have come to the resounding conclusion that happiness is not out there! We all have the ability to be happy and if we don’t feel it then we need to get into the happy habit.

It may not be possible to be happy all the time, however, if we take a more positive view on life then we…

Battle of the Intrduction Fees

2011-11-01 16:47:05

It can be rather frustrating when agencies find themselves in a position where introduction fees are disputed withtheir clients. This commonly occurs where an agency sends a candidate’s CV to a client and then other agencies send the same CV to the same client and it is not clear who is entitled to receive the fee or depending on the terms of business agreed between the parties the client might have to pay more than one fee.

The misconception that the first agency to submit the candidate’s CV gets the fee is not correct. This issue has…
