- Start with a profile summarising your key experiences, achievements and aspirations. Highlight the skills and experience that will reflect best what the job description is looking for. It is a good idea to amend your CV slightly, or have a few different versions for each role you apply for.
- A summary of educational and qualification details should be included with grades and dates. Start with your most recent qualifications and work backwards. Use bullet points for each employment position with specific dates of employment.
- Include specific achievements and successes.
- Attach a covering letter explaining specifically why you are suitable for the job.
- Check and double check for spelling and grammatical errors. It may be worth asking someone else to double check for you.
- If you have had any breaks in employment it is helpful to note what you have been doing during that period.
- Some organisations may need someone straight away, in two weeks time or even two months. Help recruiters know your availability by specifying your notice period on your CV. All that is needed is just one line, under your contact details for example.
- If you are currently living in one area but are planning on moving in the near future, mention that you are re-locating. We can misunderstand and you could lose that opportunity due to living too far away!
- Leave your hobbies and interests until last, and keep this section brief, this section should be kept brief.
- It is vital that your contact details are on your CV! We receive CVs via emails and the original email may get lost or filed separately from your CV so make sure that you have a contact number and email address somewhere on your CV. You don’t want to miss that all important opportunity because we couldn’t get hold of you!
- Some recruiters use databases that will search for keywords which relate to the job role, make sure those words are in your CV so that we can find you!
